Overview

What is Überplate?

Überplate is a template system for Übertor. It is a collection of a handful of XHTML 1.0 Strict pages that represent the type of data that Übertor outputs.

What is the point of the Überplate Template Package?

We're looking for awesome CSS designs to style the content of the package.

What is in it for me?

Money. If we like your design, we'll pay you $500 - 1,500 for the rights to your design.

Usage

What do I need to do to complete the package?

Style every .html page (area.html, blog.html, comment.html, compare.html, index.html, link.html, list.html, show.html) and submit your finished work to us. Easy as that!

What about variations? What qualifies as a variation?

Variations can be thought of as different themes for your template. They can be as simple as color and font variations, though they are not limited to those changes.

What can I do with the package?

You may add and edit as many stylesheets as you like. You also may add as many photos as you like. Please do not alter the .html files or .js files in any way. Please note, all stylesheets should be grouped according to the definition type (Base Style, Layout, or Variation) they relate to.

Tell me more about the different definition types.

Base Style

- should only include basic style definitions for your site. This file will include things such as font definitions and default styling.

Layout

- should include definitions for the placement of elements on the page. One layout is expected for each submission; no layout variations are required.

Variation

- should include all color and image styling and create a theme for the layout. Each final submission should include at least three variations. Variations typically will not alter any position or layout definitions.

Can I submit a non-final submission for review?

Please do. Once you have completed your Base Style and Layout templates for the whole site, plus one Variation, please submit your submission for preliminary review.

How do I submit the completed package?

Zip together the whole package, including all default files plus any files you've changed or added. Then email the package to mike@ubertor.com.

Can I test my work against live data?

Yes, you can, but you'll need to host your CSS and images online. You can use our Template Tester to test against any live site on the internet.

Questions

What can I change?

You have free reign to include and create as many CSS files as you like. Your CSS file(s) may also import any images you like. Please note, though, that the included image dimensions are fixed and should not be replaced.

Can I change the HTML markup?

No. The JavaScript is also off-limits.

What if there is an HTML element that I need, or I disagree with the semantics of the HTML?

Please feel free to contact us with your requests/suggestions. We value your opinion

Can I change the included images?

Images that are provided with their dimensions in their names should not be resized. Other images, such as the portraits, may be freely edited or replaced with custom graphics.

What if I have several templates that I want to submit?

Feel free to submit as many templates as you like. When submitting them, though, please package them separately.

Why is there no DOCTYPE or XML declaration?

The most recent version of the Uberplate Package has a DOCTYPE (XHTML 1.0 Strict) and XML declaration.

Why are there so many DIV tags?

The tags are there to make the markup as flexable as possible for you, the designer. You do not need to declare a style for every DIV tag.

Why are you using @import?

The use of @import is not a hack and was an internal design decision. Please use this method for including your own style sheets.

But using @import does allow you to target media types other than screen.

That is correct. Media types such as mobile, aural and print are purposefully not included. Your design should only target the media type of screen.

Can I use proprietary fonts or images in my layout?

You may use proprietary fonts and images in your submission only if you own them and have the rights to use them for commercial purposes.

How are the submissions judged?

Submissions are not judged by obscure CSS knowledge or Photoshop proress. They are judged by their display of the applicant's talent through the choices he or she makes concerning layout, design, and styling.

How many templates are you looking for?

Quality concerns us more than quantity. If you are considering creating multiple submissions, please develop them one at a time, submitting one for review and possible acceptance before beginning on your next.
